News & technical articles
Hollow plastic products bring together shape, material and manufacturing decisions. Good design starts with how the product will be used.
The original article explores plastic packaging and hollow technical parts, from bottles and containers to toys, pallets and traffic products. Different uses call for different geometry, material and performance requirements.

For a packaging container, consider the contents, closure, handling and storage conditions. For a technical part, define the mounting, dimensions, service environment and required mechanical behavior. These requirements should guide both the material and the forming process.
Plastics offer choices in weight, color, transparency and shape. Their response to temperature, impact, chemicals, weathering and surface wear depends on the particular material and grade. Avoid treating all plastic materials as having the same performance.
A similar-looking hollow part may be made by different processes. Extrusion blow molding forms a parison, closes a mold around it and inflates it. Other processes use different tooling and forming steps. Match the process to the geometry, production requirement and material instead of assuming a change of mold is sufficient.
Review the parting line, wall distribution, neck or openings, trimming and cooling with the machine and mold team. A drawing, sample and clear acceptance criteria help turn a concept into a practical trial.
